ADHD in Children
ADHD isn't about a child being lazy or disobedient. It's a neurological difference that affects how the brain manages attention, impulses, and activity levels making everyday tasks feel overwhelming.
What it is
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and executive function. It's not about a child choosing not to focus it's that their brain processes information differently.
In Pakistan, ADHD is often mistaken for laziness, disobedience, or low intelligence. Many children struggle through school without ever receiving the support they need.
What it looks like in real life
"He's so bright, but he can't sit still long enough to finish his homework."
"She loses everything her school bag, her pencil case, her shoes."
"He blurts out answers before I've even finished asking the question."
Woh padhai mein smart hai lekin uska dil nahi lagta.
Some children with ADHD are hyperactive and impulsive, others are quiet and easily distracted, and many are a combination of both. The presentation can look very different from child to child.
What it is not
ADHD is not bad parenting, too much screen time, or a lack of discipline. It's a neurological condition with a strong genetic component, and it can be managed effectively with the right support.
What treatment involves
Assessment involves a detailed history, behavioural observations, and sometimes rating scales. Treatment typically includes parent training, classroom strategies, and in moderate-to-severe cases, medication.
Early intervention makes a significant difference. With proper support, children with ADHD can thrive academically and socially.
When to seek help now
If your child is consistently struggling at school, if their behaviour is causing problems in friendships, or if you're noticing significant frustration on their part an assessment can help clarify what's going on and open doors to support.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
