Grief & Bereavement
Grief isn't something to "get over" quickly. It's a natural response to loss that doesn't follow a timeline and can affect every aspect of your life physical, emotional, and spiritual.
What it is
Grief is the natural response to loss the emotional pain of losing someone or something important. Bereavement specifically refers to the period after a death. Grief can also follow other significant losses like a relationship, health, or identity.
In Pakistan, grief is often ritualised through religious and cultural practices, but the ongoing emotional pain that follows is rarely discussed openly.
What it looks like in real life
"It's been a year and I still can't talk about them without crying."
"I feel guilty for laughing, for enjoying things, for being alive."
"People tell me to move on, but I don't know how."
Dil mein dard hai lekin logon ke saamne muskuraana padta hai.
Grief doesn't follow a neat timeline. It can come in waves sometimes you feel fine, and then a song or a smell brings it all back. There's no "right" way to grieve, and it's not something you simply "get over."
What it is not
Grief isn't a problem to be solved, and there's no deadline for when you should "feel better." It's not weakness to need support, and prolonged grief is not a sign of failure it's a sign that you need more help than you're currently getting.
What treatment involves
Grief counselling provides a safe space to process your loss without judgement. It helps you find ways to carry the grief rather than be consumed by it.
For prolonged grief, more structured therapy may be needed. The goal isn't to forget the person you lost, but to find a way to live with their absence while still finding meaning in your own life.
When to seek help now
If grief is preventing you from functioning in daily life, if you're having thoughts that life isn't worth living without the person you lost, or if you feel stuck in your grief without any movement please reach out. You don't have to carry this alone.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
