Anger & Emotional Dysregulation

Difficulty managing anger isn't a personality flaw. It's often a sign that underlying emotions are overwhelming and the brain's ability to regulate responses isn't working as it should.

What it is

Emotional dysregulation is the inability to manage emotional responses effectively. It can manifest as intense anger outbursts, rapid mood shifts, or difficulty calming down after being upset.

In Pakistan, anger is often culturally accepted, especially in men making it harder for people to recognise when their anger is actually a symptom of something deeper.

What it looks like in real life

"I explode over small things and then feel terrible afterwards."
"My family walks on eggshells around me because they don't know what will set me off."
"I know my reaction is disproportionate, but I can't control it in the moment."
Gussa aata hai toh control nahi hota, baad mein regret hota hai.

Anger often masks other emotions fear, hurt, shame, or helplessness. When someone can't access or express these underlying feelings, anger becomes the default response.

What it is not

Emotional dysregulation isn't "just a temper problem" or something you can fix by "trying harder." It involves real difficulties in emotional processing that respond to specific therapeutic approaches.

What treatment involves

Treatment helps identify the triggers and underlying emotions driving the anger. We work on developing alternative responses and building emotional awareness.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills are particularly effective for emotional regulation, teaching techniques for managing intense emotions without acting on them impulsively.

When to seek help now

If your anger is causing harm to relationships, if you're having thoughts of violence towards others or yourself, or if you feel out of control please reach out. Anger management is not about suppressing emotions it's about understanding and managing them effectively.

The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
